Heating Hexham Project Update
We are now two weeks into the project, with expressions of interest (EOIs) already received for nearly 10 GWh per annum of heat. Additional EOIs are expected next week, which could bring the total estimated anchor loads to between 15-20 GWh per annum—the equivalent of providing heating and hot water for approximately 1,500 homes.
Carbon Savings
Using high-level assumptions and Defra’s figures for CO₂ emissions from natural gas, it is estimated that this scheme could save approximately 3,067 tonnes of CO₂ annually once anchor loads are connected, assuming an annual heat demand of 15 GWh.
For context, the IMPACT: Community Carbon Calculator estimates that natural gas use in Hexham currently accounts for approximately 14,970 tonnes of CO₂ annually. This means the scheme could deliver a potential 20% reduction in Hexham’s annual CO₂ emissions from gas heating, representing a significant platform to build upon for further decarbonisation efforts.
Funding Opportunities
We are actively exploring several funding opportunities to support the next stages of development. These include:
• A Green Heat Network Fund (GHNF) application in February.
• Submitting an Expression of Interest for Borderlands Capital Funding, also in February. More details are available here.
Interest and support from the community are vital to the success of this project, including strengthening bids for funding.
